Over five days in Da Nang, the weltwärts Southeast Asia Partner Conference 2026 brought together partner organisations from Vietnam, Germany, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, Timor-Leste, and Cambodia. More than just a gathering, the conference created a shared space for dialogue, reflection, and collaboration across diverse contexts and experiences.

Jointly organised by Deutsch-Indonesische Gesellschaft (DIZ), Catalyst for Change Vietnam, and Karl Kübel Stiftung, with the support of Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and Engagement Global, the conference focused on strengthening partnerships within the weltwärts programme while exploring its evolving role in a changing global landscape.

A Space for Dialogue and Exchange

Throughout the week, participants engaged in open and honest discussions around the realities of volunteer services today. Conversations covered administrative challenges, visa processes, safeguarding and child rights, as well as the practicalities of implementing international exchange programmes across different national systems.

Interactive formats such as World Café sessions and thematic working groups allowed participants to move beyond surface-level sharing. These spaces encouraged the exchange of lived experiences, the identification of shared challenges, and the co-creation of practical solutions grounded in real organisational contexts.

Reflecting on Impact and Responsibility

A key thread running through the conference was reflection. Participants explored how volunteer programmes create impact in the Global South, not only during the placement period but also long after volunteers return home.

Special attention was given to the role of returnees, how they carry forward their experiences, contribute to their communities, and continue engaging with global issues. These discussions highlighted that meaningful impact is not a one-time outcome, but an ongoing process shaped by people, relationships, and continued commitment.

From Conversation to Context

The conference extended beyond meeting rooms. A field visit provided participants with the opportunity to connect discussions to on-the-ground initiatives, offering a deeper understanding of local realities and the communities at the heart of the programme.

These moments grounded the broader conversations, reminding participants of the human stories behind policies, structures, and partnerships.

Building Trust Through Shared Experience

Beyond formal sessions, the conference was shaped equally by informal moments. Shared meals, cultural exchange activities, and conversations outside structured discussions created space for genuine connection.

These interactions helped build trust across organisations and countries - an essential foundation for long-term collaboration. Whether through storytelling, cultural performances, or simple daily exchanges, participants experienced the diversity and richness of the network firsthand.

Looking Ahead: The Future of weltwärts

As the conference concluded, discussions turned toward the future of the weltwärts programme. Participants reflected on how the network can continue adapting to global changes while remaining rooted in its core values of learning, solidarity, and partnership.

One message stood out clearly:the strength of weltwärts lies not only in its structure, but in the people who actively shape it.

Through collaboration, critical reflection, and a shared commitment to meaningful impact, this network continues to evolve - carried forward by those who believe in its purpose.
