Life in a Vietnamese Fishing Village

Hello, my name is Jonas, I am 19 years old, and I am stationed for six months in a small fishing village called Phuoc Hai. It is located near the port city of Vung Tau. I live with a host family that has three children, so things are never boring at home.

My work mainly revolves around teaching. I work at a private English school, give private tutoring lessons, and teach German once a week.

Since it is a private English school, the students attend their regular school in the morning and come to my English school in the afternoon. This means I usually have most of my mornings free. I use this time to exercise, paint, and contribute generously to the revenue of local restaurants. ;) Most of my lesson planning is also done in the morning.

In the afternoon, I head to the school and classes begin. The class sizes are now relatively small, with an average of about four students.

On weekends, English classes take place in the morning. Afterwards, I often have time for breakfast before heading to students’ homes for private tutoring. After two hours, I return home, where I teach German for another hour and a half.

After that, the day is basically done, although a few small, spontaneous tasks can always come up.

I use my days off for small trips. For example, last week I spent one night on the nearby island of Con Dao. You can see a few pictures below.
